As this portrait shows, by the mid-1920s, Fry had reverted to a more traditional mode of representation. Despite Fry's and Bell's adherance to formalism, his depiction of Bell is relatively restrained, the creation of a sympathetic likeness apparently taking precedent over the assertion of 'significant form'.
