After Cambridge Rothschild entered the family bank, N.M. Rothschild. But his abiding interest was in natural history. He became the foremost authority on the subject of fleas, publishing about 150 papers and describing over 500 new species, and in 1901 discovered the flea that spread the Black Death in Europe.
