Architect Holden's philosophy was 'When in doubt, leave it out', a strain of purist thinking which informs his many public buildings including numerous commissions undertaken for London Transport and London University. He encouraged the work of sculptors and is particularly associated with Jacob Epstein whose sculptures for Holden's British Medical Association building (now Zimbabwe House) in The Strand caused public outcry.
