Pierrepont (born Charles Medows) joined the Royal Navy as a lieutenant and commander in 1797 before promotion to captain the following year. He served with Lord Nelson in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars but retired from the Navy in 1803. His elder brother Evelyn died in 1801, when Charles adopted the surname Pierrepont and took his brother's seat as MP for Nottinghamshire.
