Conservative MP for Birmingham (1918-40), Chamberlain was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1923-4), Minister for Health (1924-9) and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the National Government (1931-7), becoming Prime Minister in 1937. His premiership was beset by the question of Germany's territorial ambitions in Europe. To avoid war, Chamberlain met with Adolf Hitler in September 1938, subsequently announcing 'Peace for our time'.
