Moore came from an artistic family; his father and several of his brothers were painters. He exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy when he was just sixteen, and enrolled at the Royal Academy schools a year later. In the mid-1860s he became close to James Whistler and Frederic Lord Leighton. He shared a studio with Whistler and began to produce the decorative works for which he is best known today.
