Abraham Stanyan entered the Middle Temple to study Law in 1690, but he soon gave this up to follow a career as a diplomat. In 1705 he was made envoy to Switzerland, where he served for nearly ten years, publishing a detailed and accurate Account of Switzerland on his return in 1714. Stanyan's final posting, from 1718 to 1730, was as Ambassador to Constantinople, now Instanbul. His successor Lord Kinnoull spent three months with him there, surviving daily feasts which he said 'almost kill'd me'.
