Cavendish entered Parliament as a Liberal Unionist MP in 1891, where he was the youngest member of the House of Commons. He remained there until 1908, when his uncle's death made him Duke of Devonshire and raised him to the House of Lords. In 1916, Cavendish was appointed to a five-year term as Governor General of Canada.
