by and published by John Smith, after Thomas Murray
The work displayed here is a print based on the self-portrait Murray presented in 1708 to the Medici collection of self-portraits. This collection was started by Leopoldo de’ Medici in 1664 and, by the end of the seventeenth century, it included self-portraits by many European masters, such as Van Dyck and Rubens. It soon became the custom for leading contemporary artists – such as Murray – to donate their self-portraits to the prestigious collection.
