Ordained Deacon in 1874 and became a priest the following year. He served as Chaplain to Archibald Campbell Tait, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and married Tait's daughter, Edith. When Tait died Queen Victoria asked Davidson for an account of the deathbed scene; he so impressed her that he became her trusted confidant and was made Dean of Windsor.
