Born on the 25 March, William and Jane's younger daughter Mary was always known as May. As an artist-craftswoman she specialised in embroidery, also designing wallpapers for Morris & Co. and taking a leading role in the Arts & Crafts Movement. Examples of her jewellery can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum. Active in the Socialist movement with Bernard Shaw, Eleanor Marx and Ramsay Macdonald, she was also a keen theatre-goer.
