James Hutton NPG D16838

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by John Kay

Hutton is regarded as the founder of geology. Until he examined the rocks of Scotland, it was believed from 'evidence' in the Old Testament that the world was created in 4004 BC. He saw that the Earth's surface had been shaped over millions of years by natural forces, rather than in 7 days as described in the Bible. Like other Enlightenment thinkers, he held that the findings of science, not tradition, should inform our views of the world.
