Arthur Ponsonby was the third son of Sir Henry Ponsonby, Private Secretary to Queen Victoria, and the great-grandson of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough. Ponsonby entered Parliament as a Liberal MP in 1908. in 1918 he lost his seat and stood as an independent MP, and in 1922 he joined the Labour Party and was re-elected to Parliament.
