Educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford, Tawney was one of the foremost left-wing intellectuals of his generation. He became Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics. His best known work Religion and the Rise of Capitalism (1926), was dedicated to Bishop Gore, a friend of Mansbridge's and one of the moving spirits behind the founding of the Association.
