Chadwick was drawn towards the idea of being a sculptor after seeing the work of Jacob Epstein. On the advice of his parents, he began training to be an architect but part-way through his studies he decided against a career in architecture. After the war, during which he flew convoy planes, he began to create mobile sculptures to be used as features on exhibition stands.
