Dublin-born Moore found fame as a poet and balladeer. His ballads were hugely popular, and were published as Moore's Irish Melodies in 1846 and 1852. He had success as a society figure in London. In 1803 was appointed registrar to the Admiralty in Bermuda. Moore returned to England in 1804; the deputy he left in his place absconded, leaving Moore with a debt that forced him to live abroad for years.
