Wood was the first British-born musician to make a career almost entirely from conducting. In 1895 he was invited to conduct the newly created Promenade Concerts, still affectionately known as the 'Proms'. These concerts aimed to 'present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences'. Wood created mixed programmes that included the music of contemporary composers such as Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Vaughan Williams alongside more familiar works. He was knighted in 1911.
