His first book Roman Baroque Art (1937) was the fruit of three years as Librarian at the British School at Rome from 1933 to 1936. He became, however, an authority on British painting, publishing a monograph on Joshua Reynolds (1941), and Painting in Britain 1530-1790 (1953), and Gainsborough (1958). He was on the board of the Burlington and effective Editor from 1945 until Benedict Nicolson's appointment in 1947.
