'The factory king', Oastler was a Tory radical who turned factory reform into a compelling national issue. His paternalistic view of society meant that he abhorred the idea of universal suffrage. However, he was a hero without parallel within northern radicalism and his inclusion symbolically incorporated him into the Chartist movement.
