One of the major figures behind the establishment of the Independent Television Network in 1955. He began his career as a novelist, publishing successfully in the 1930s while also working in broadcasting as a producer for BBC Radio. In 1946, he was appointed controller of the Light Programme, and his success in this role led to his appointment as controller of the BBC Television Service.
