The son of actors, Phillips first came to prominence as a bass in 1824 as Casper in Weber's Die Freischutz at the English Opera House. In 1825 he became principle bass at the Ancient Concerts, a series of performances with royal patronage that took place at Hanover Square (1776-1848). Phillips sang at the premieres of several British operas in the 1830s, contributing to the development of English Romantic opera and worked with the composer Felix Mendelssohn on projects including Elijah (1847).
