In 1711 George Graham joined London's leading clock and watchmaking business which he later inherited. He made many design improvements to the pendulum clock, important in tracking the timing of star constellations. Graham also constructed for the astronomer Edmond Halley a special telescope called a transit telescope which was mounted sa s to allow it to be pointed only at objects crossing the meridian.
