Charlotte Smith was a poet and novelist who lived in rural Sussex. Her most famous work was the Elegiac Sonnets that, within the first twenty years of being published, went through nine editions and filled two volumes. Charlotte married Richard Smith, the son of a West India merchant and director of the East India Company. Richard was an owner of plantations and enslaved Africans in Barbados.
