William Page Wood, Baron Hatherley, was a statesman who served as a Liberal Lord Chancellor in Gladstone's first ministry. Wood was called to the Bar in 1824 where he studied conveyancing. He soon built up a good practice as an equity draughtsman and as an adviser to parliamentary committees. In 1845 he became Queen's Counsel, and two years later was elected to parliament as a Liberal MP.
