'Tom of Ten Thousand'; succeeded to Longleat on the death of his uncle, Sir James Thynne, 1670; he attached himself first to James, Duke of York, and afterwards to the Duke of Monmouth, and was removed from command of the Wiltshire Militia for hostility at Court. Thynne married the heiress Lady Elizabeth Percy in 1681 and was murdered by Count Koningsmark, a rival suitor.
