In 1786, de Grey succeeded his father as 3rd Baron Grantham of Grantham, and on the death of his maternal aunt in 1833, he became 2nd Earl de Grey. A moderate Tory, he supported Catholic emancipation in the 1820s. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty (1834-5) and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1841, a post he held for four years.
