Taylor studied art before working as an actor and photographer. He was introduced to Victor Musgrave and Ida Kar in 1956 by Colin MacInnes, and from then worked as her assistant for two years. Encouraged by MacInnes, Taylor wrote the novel Barons Court, All Change (1961). Taylor inspired the character of the teenage photographer who narrates MacInnes's novel Absolute Beginners.
