Sir Charles Holroyd initially studied engineering at Leeds, then from 1880 to 1884 moved to London to study art at the Slade School under Legros. He began exhibiting etchings at the Society of Painter-Etchers and became a Fellow of the society in 1885. Holroyd exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1885 until 1895, mainly religious and historical subjects and portraits. Later he confined himself primarily to landscape painting and etching.
