Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, Rushdie was sent to England at the age of fourteen to complete his education. Much of his work is set on the Indian subcontinent and combines magical realism and historical fiction. His novel Midnight's Children was a critical success and won him the Booker Prize (1981), whilst The Satanic Verses (1988) provoked a strong backlash globally from Muslim communities who considered it blasphemous.
