Naval commander whose privateering ventures helped to estrange him from the court of Charles I; involved in the colonisation of America; associated with the foundation of New Plymouth, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and later of Rhode Island (1644); raised forces for Parliament and was appointed Lord High Admiral (1643); ejected from office by the independents and subsequently took no part in Commonwealth affairs.
