Having trained in Leiden in the 1690s, Richard Mead became the leading surgeon in early eighteenth-century Britain. He earned great sums attending many of the era's leading figures including Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Robert Walpole. He was also physician to George I, George II and Queen Caroline whom he encouraged to inoculate the royal children against smallpox.
