Born in Richmond, Surrey, Dimbleby left school aged eighteen to work for the family newspaper, The Richmond and Twickenham Times. He joined the BBC in 1936 as its first news observer. In 1939 Dimbleby became the BBC's first war correspondent and accompanied the British Expeditionary Force to France. In 1945, he broadcast the first reports from Belsen concentration camp.
