In 1900 Spielmann described Frank Bowcher as the 'one medallist of distinct ability devoting himself almost exclusively to the art [in Britain]'. Twenty-two years later Bowcher presented him with this exquisitely modelled plaquette. Portraiture on such a small scale was facilitated by use of a 'reducing machine'.
