Lake was appointed Bishop of Sodor and Man in 1682 and progressed swiftly to the Bishoprics of Bristol and then Chichester. In 1688 he was one of the seven bishops who signed a petition to King James II asking him to reconsider his Declaration of Indulgence, a policy of religious tolerance towards Catholics.
