Hans Arp, later known as Jean, trained in his native Strasbourg before studying at the Académie Julian in Paris. He collaborated in Dada activities with Max Ernst in Cologne and participated in the first surrealist exhibition (1925). In the late 1920s Arp developed his best-known work, the sculptures 'in the round' and continued his experiments with abstract forms making his first papiers déchirés (torn papers) and writing poetry.
