This apparently informal sketch shows Sala at the Royal Courts of Justice during the notorious Parnell Commission. The hearings followed the publication of letters in The Times linking the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, Charles Stewart Parnell, with Fenian crimes. Sala became personally involved in the case when he was asked to witness the confession of Richard Pigott to forging the Parnell letters. Sala's wry account of the episode was a particular coup for the Daily Telegraph and appreciably boosted its circulation.
