His best-remembered fictional work is The Rescue: a Melodrama for Broadcasting (1943) for which Benjamin Britten produced a score. He contributed his first 'Gramophone Notes' to the New Statesman in 1935, and for the next twenty years he became one of the most respected music critics of his generation.
