by Edward Scriven, published by John Samuel Murray, after Francis Kyte

Johnson's career breakthrough in London came via the highly successful and innovative Gentleman's Magazine. Founded in 1731 and edited by the printer Edward Cave, the magazine was the first publication of its kind. It included essays; extracts from newspapers; parliamentary reports; poetry and biographies. Johnson frequently contributed to the magazine from 1738 to 1744. When Cave died in January 1754 Johnson wrote a short account of his life.
