In his day a celebrated playwright and essayist, Bax was the youngest brother of composer Sir Arnold Bax. His first piece for the commercial theatre was The Poetasters of Ispahan (1912) but it was not until 1923 that he received attention for his reconstruction of John Gay's ballad-opera Polly. Among his most notable plays were Socrates (1930) and The Rose without a Thorn (1932). Other works included his own reminiscences and a biography of cricket legend W.G. Grace (1952).
