A barrister, Manners Sutton was elected as a Tory MP in 1806. In parliament he served as Judge Advocate General, responsible for judicial functions in the British Army from 1809 to 1817 and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1809. He spoke against parliamentary reform and concessions to Roman Catholics. In 1817 he was elected Speaker of the House of Commons, a post he held for seventeen years.
