This engraving is based on a portrait belonging to the Earls of Stamford, who were descended from Lady Jane Grey's relatives. The portrait conforms to descriptions of Lady Jane favouring plain dress in opposition to the high fashion worn by the Catholic Princess Mary. This faithful copy exposes the embellishments in Robert White's engraving, which includes fur trimming and an incongruous pearl diadem to imply regal splendour.
