After acting on the West End stage, Forbes made his film debut in 1948 and has played numerous supporting roles in films including; An Inspector Calls (1954) and The Colditz Story (1955). In 1959, he formed a production company, Beaver Films, with Richard Attenborough. As a screenwriter, he received acclaim for The League of Gentlemen (1959), in which he also acted, and The Angry Silence (1960). Forbes made his directorial debut in Whistle Down the Wind (1961).
