Muffin the Mule first appeared on For the Children in 1946, his strings pulled by Ann Hogarth, while Annette Mills sang and played the piano. Shortly after, they were given a whole programme and, with other characters including Sally the sealion, Louise the lamb and Monty the monkey, rapidly became a favourite on children's television.
