Oscar Wilde Unisex t-shirt
Organic cotton unisex t-shirt featuring Oscar Wilde.
Wit and dramatist renowned as an aesthete from an early age. His unconventional behaviour, witty and paradoxical remarks, and dandified pose brought him notoriety. Wilde wrote a series of highly successful comedies in the 1890s, including The Importance of being Earnest. In 1895 Wilde was imprisoned for homosexual offences, as a result of which he published The Ballad of Reading Gaol, 1898.
This photograph of Oscar Wilde was taken by the New York studio photographer Napoleon Sarony. Wilde had arrived in New York in January 1882 on the steamship Arizona, with 'nothing to declare but his genius'. He needed a publicity photograph for his lecture tour, so he went to Sarony's studio. As Sarony declared, Wilde was 'a picturesque subject indeed'.
