Stephen of Blois usurped the English throne in 1135 on the death of his uncle Henry I. Before his death, Henry had made his barons swear allegiance to his daughter Matilda as successor following the accidental drowning of both his legitimate male heirs. Stephen's coronation was met with little opposition as women were considered unfit to rule at that time. He was temporarily deposed in 1141 following an invasion led by Matilda and was re-crowned twice during his troubled reign.
