Physician and academic, Cullis was the first woman to serve as a professor of physiology and lectured internationally on the application of science to healthy living and preventing disease. Throughout her career, she used lecturing as a platform to campaign for women's right to higher education. After attending Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1901 she became a demonstrator in physiology at the London School of Medicine for Women.
