Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, he initially working as a teacher and also played rugby. Ordained in 1932 Macpherson started his new career as a curate in Yorkshire and then became a minor canon at Ripon Cathedral. In the second world war, he served as a Royal Naval chaplain on HMS Indomitable, and from 1954 to 1969 was Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, where he was instrumental in its restoration.
