Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy. Born in Nice, he was christened Joseph-Marie Garibaldi on 4 July 1807. Drawn into life at sea by his family's involvement with coastal trade, he was certified as a merchant navy captain in 1832.
