Farson first met the author of Of Human Bondage (1915) and Cakes and Ale (1930) through his godfather Tom Seyster, while a student of Ashbury College, Canada. Farson found Maugham to be 'astringent, withdrawn, cynical and parsimonious, but … he befriended me with a gentleness which belied his reputation.'
