Brydges trained as a barrister but never practised. An interest in topography and antiquities led to his editing the Topographer magazine and publishing his Topographical Miscellanies (1792). He also published some significant bibliographical works, including Censura Literaria (1805-09) and Restituta; or, Titles, Extracts, and Characters of Old Books in English Literature, Revived (1814-16).
